Major new data centre venture for TDC in northern Sweden

Dec 7th, 2015   News

IT and telecoms company TDC announced today it is strengthening its telecoms presence in northern Sweden, and thus supporting establishment of data centres in the area. Several partnerships have been formed, with, among others, Fortlax data centres and Hydro66, both in northern Sweden. The investments total over SEK 10 million, and more is in the pipeline.

tdc“TDC’s original intended contribution to the data centre venture was connectivity, but there are additional relevant areas. For example, our IT and hosting expertise is of interest and relevance,” says Oscar Wenell, Business Area Manager for Networking at TDC Sverige.

TDC already has a strong presence in northern Sweden, with five offices and several county councils and municipalities in the region as customers. This data centre venture further strengthens that presence.

  • TDC is investing over SEK 10 million in infrastructure expansion, including increasing the connection points to 24 PoPs (point of presence)
  • TDC is working with Fortlax and its two data centres
  • TDC is signing a partner agreement and working with Hydro66
  • TDC is part of The Node Pole Alliance, consisting of municipalities and companies aiming to develop data centres in the region

“We are now intensifying the construction of the digital highway from northern Sweden to Europe and the rest of the world for our customers. Given our international background, in parallel with our already strong presence in the north, this is a natural step for us. TDC’s original intended contribution to the data centre venture was connectivity, but there are additional relevant areas. For example, our IT and hosting expertise is of interest and relevance from a data centre perspective,” says Oscar Wenell, Business Area Manager for Networking at TDC Sverige.

“With TDC’s genuine and extensive experience and well-developed communication infrastructure within Sweden, the Nordic region and Europe, we are pleased that they have chosen to establish themselves with us, which enables us to provide our customers with data center services with improved communication,” says Anders Berglund, CEO Fortlax AB.

“Hydro66 recognizes the mission critical importance to our clients of data diversity, performance and cost. The new TDC PoP in our data centre further enhances the services we can offer the global clients we are helping to attract to the Boden data centre hub. We are delighted to be engaging with TDC as a core node partner on their new network segment in Sweden,” says Christiaan Keet, CTO of Hydro66.

“More and more companies are seeing that it’s better to transfer data than to transfer energy. Thanks to TDC’s focus on improved connectivity and infrastructure in the region we can provide the market with an even stronger offer. Hydro66 and Fortlax, customers at the co-location data centre, now enjoy an even better and more competitive service. This brings us closer to the world,” says Anne Graf, Investment & Development Director, The Node Pole.

More facts:

  • The communication network is constructed using WDM technology for maximum possible transmission quality, minimum possible delay and optimum redundancy
  • DWDM system expansion is based on around 1600 kilometres of dark fibre
  • 24 PoPs, of which eight with possible customer connections
  • Capacity of up to 80 wavelengths of 100gb (@8tb) per pair of fibres
