Facebook to build second data center in The Node Pole
Less than a year after setting up a first data center in Sweden, Facebook now reveals plans of starting construction of a second data center shortly. The second building will be situated adjacent to the existing center and house some of the latest innovations within technology and energy efficiency.
– When Facebook chose to establish its first European data center in Luleå, this was a historic milestone and the markings of a new digital industrial era for us. Today’s announcement of further investments marks another chapter in the history our digital development as a node for data centers is being written, says Matz Engman, CEO of Luleå Business & Economic Development.
Facebook’s choice of establishing its first center in Luleå, Sweden was originally made after examining a variety of options throughout Europe. After a rigorous review process the company concluded that the Luleå region, located within the arctic north of Sweden, offered the optimum package – with access to renewable energy, stable power grids, suitable land property as well as a highly skilled labor force within the tech-industry and a facilitating business climate within regional and local communities.
Since late 2011, when Facebook announced the decision to establish server operations in Luleå, Swedish private as well as public actors have pledged to further extensive infrastructural investments, effectively doubling the capacity for internet traffic to and from Sweden. Swedish construction giant NCC has also created a special data center design division based in Luleå, and three market leaders from supporting industries have established local branches within the region. The local science park has lately seen an influx of new companies by 25 per cent.
The Luleå high-tech industry is a part of The Node Pole, a regional initiative amassing local governments and businesses in nearby cities to attract international investments into the region. The name The Node Pole is a word play upon the regions location within the Arctic Circle and the region being a main hub for data traffic across all of Europe. This position is further strengthened by Google recently deciding to buy wind powered electricity for its nearby data center across the Gulf of Bothnia in Finland from The Node Pole grid, as well as by Bitcoin pioneers KnC Miner just a month ago announcing their ongoing production of a mega data center in Boden, another region within the Node Pole. KnC Miner’s mega data center is expected to be fully operational within the next few months, and is projected to initially require 10 MW of electricity and provide over 30 annual jobs to the local community.
– The recent establishments, with today’s announcement from Facebook as the most recent example, confirms our firm belief that our region is an optimal locality for these types of establishments, says Erik Lundström, newly appointed CEO of The Node Pole.
Luleå has its roots within the pulp, mining and steel industries, which are also still important industries in the region today. Over the years, the heavy industry demand for cost efficient and stable energy production has spurred the development of a reliable and highly proven power grid which is now serving as a major competitive advantage in the competition for global industrial investments. The region is located on the same northern latitude as Fairbanks, Alaska and is one of the coldest parts of Sweden. This cold has been a key factor behind Facebook’s choice of venue.
